The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said they came across a rare find during their annual snake survey: an eastern Massasauga rattlesnake.
HURON COUNTY, Ohio - , in Huron County during the survey in May. ODNR officials say officers captured the snake for measurements before releasing the reptile.
The snake, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , is venomous; however, people rarely suffer bites from the species due to their ‘elusive and shy’ behavior.The species was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2016 because of significant population reductions following habitat loss, according to the FWS. The eastern Massasauga species typically live in shallow wetlands and surrounding upland areas.
Most of the remaining populations live in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa, as well as in Ontario, Canada.Copyright 2024 WOIO. All rights reserved.
