The city has many links to the historic ship

The White Star Line-owned ship required the labour of 3,000 men over a two-year period between 1909 and 1911 and possessed a grand staircase, swimming pool, Turkish bath, smoking room, dining saloon, gymnasium, café, writing room and lounge. Once the largest ship in the world, it was on April 10, 1912 that it left Southampton for New York.

Titanic's managing company, the White Star Line, had its head office in 30 James Street, Liverpool. And while the majority of the crew were from the South Coast, many of the key personnel had Liverpool links. But Captain Smith's significant ties to Merseyside and the Titanic is still of historic interest today. The ECHO previously reported how a cigar box once owned by the captain of passenger liner Titanic sold for £25,000 at a Liverpool auction. And in the past, we've seen local families showcase his former home. In 2012, Rose Gallagher told the ECHO how she regularly gets coach loads of tourists arriving at the front door of her home in Marine Crescent, Waterloo.

But now, a new piece of the family's history is going to be on display not too far from the city. St Oswald’s Church, Winwick, which is in the Liverpool diocese, was the setting for the marriage of the future captain, who married a local farmer’s daughter Sarah Eleanor Pennington, of Woodhead, Winwick, in January 1887.
