Eggshells were on the ground near the base of the tree, and the nest was dangling and tilted to one side.
. To his relief, the tree was still standing – but as he got closer, he realized the nest was dangling and tilted to one side, and the birds were gone.
By the time the sun came out, he saw eggshells on the ground near the base of the tree, and realized the softer materials cushioning the inside of the nest had toppled out and were scattered over the ground below. “It was just terrible news, especially after everything these two birds have been through,” Lewis said. “The winds were just horrific. I live across the street and my house was just shaking and rocking.”The pair of bald eagles have been hanging out at the golf course for nearly three months, marking the first time the once-endangered species had established a nest in the area in at least 50 years,Lewis believes the mother had subsequently laid two eggs, both of which were destroyed in the storm.
That’s exactly what these bald eagles did, and over the last week, Lewis has been watching the birds fly to and from their second nest on the opposite end of the golf course. It’s not clear if the eagles will attempt to lay more eggs this year, but it’s not entirely unheard of for bald eagles to lay “second clutches” in the same season if the first nesting attempt fails.
