Jeffrey Romig, a retired air traffic controller with 25 years of experience in Rochester, reacted to what he called a 'incredibly rare' and tragic incident.

Images showing wreckage after a military helicopter crashes into the American Airlines plane near Reagan National Airport Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025. Rochester, N.Y. — A fatal collision between an American Airlines jet and a military helicopter over the Potomac River near D.C.'s Reagan National Airport has raised questions about how something like this could happen.

"That's the controller’s worst fear or nightmare is a collision, because your job is to prevent collisions," Romig said. "That's job number one.", air traffic control had advised the helicopter of the plane's approach and asked the helicopter pilots to confirm they had the plane in sight. In the recording, the DCA said, "PAT25 do you have CRJ in sight?" and the pilot replies, "PAT25 has aircraft in sight, visual separation."

"All I understand is that the tower controller gave a traffic call to the helicopter and said, 'Confirm you have the RJ in sight, pass behind him,'" Romig explained. "The controller did take action to try and prevent it. But like I said, we just don't know enough about what was going on in the cockpits of those two planes as to how they how this could have happened.""Flying is still a safe way to travel. In my mind, I would, I would still fly," he said.
