Raptors Acquire Brandon Ingram From Pelicans in Blockbuster Trade
NBATradeRaptors

The Toronto Raptors have made a significant move at the NBA trade deadline, acquiring All-Star forward Brandon Ingram from the struggling New Orleans Pelicans.

The Toronto Raptors have acquired former All-Star Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans in a significant trade. ESPN's Shams Charania broke the news via X. As part of the deal, the Pelicans will receive dynamic guard Bruce Brown Jr. , Kelly Olynyk , a first-round draft pick, and a second-round draft pick. Brown is currently an unrestricted free agent and is earning $23 million this season. Ingram has been a consistent performer for the Pelicans this season, averaging 22.

2 points per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from three-point range. However, injuries have been a concern, as he has only played in 18 games and has been sidelined since December 7th due to an ankle injury. The 27-year-old has spent the last six-plus seasons with the Pelicans. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Ingram boasts a career average of 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 0.7 steals per game across 495 games played. The Pelicans are struggling this season, holding the bottom spot in the Western Conference with a 12-38 record. While the Raptors aren't faring much better at 16-34, their decision to acquire Ingram at the trade deadline may seem unconventional. Nevertheless, Ingram is on an expiring contract, and his arrival should not hinder the Raptors' long-term rebuild plans. The Pelicans and Ingram were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension earlier in the season. He declined a $50 million contract offer in 2023 and a $40 million extension in 2024. It is evident that Ingram had his sights set on another team, but whether that team is the Raptors remains to be seen. The Pelicans have been actively making moves, including trading Daniel Theis to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. This move, which saw Theis' expiring $2.1 million contract go to the Thunder, helped the Pelicans fall below the luxury tax threshold, saving them $1.4 million. The Pelicans, facing the reality of losing Ingram for nothing, were left with no choice but to secure something in return for his talent.
