The song ‘1-800-273-8255’—the national suicide prevention hotline—and Logic’s ensuing performances led to higher call volume and decrease in suicides, research shows

The 31-year-old rapper’s hit titled “1-800-273-8255” fueled the artist’s breakthrough on the music charts in 2017. He performed it at the MTV Video Music Awards four years ago and at the 60th Grammy Awards in 2018, where it was nominated for song of the year and best music video.in the medical journal BMJ says the song prompted a significant increase in phone calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the days after its release and both of Logic’s performances.

The study showed that the lifeline received 9,915 more calls in the 34-day period after the three events, an increase of 6.9% relative to the expected number over a typical time frame. The study concluded that the song’s impact led to 245 fewer suicides than expected over that period. The study says the impact of the song may be related to the Papageno effect, the possible positive impacts that mass media’s stories of hope and recovery can have on suicidal crises. Its more common counterpart, the Werther effect, is when suicidal ideation and rates increase after the intense coverage of a suicide.

She said that previous research has shown that calls to the hotline reduce emotional distress and suicidality in callers. Other studies have also demonstrated that the news media’s sharing stories of hope and recovery also can reduce suicides, she added.Logic wasn’t immediately available for comment., he said of the song: “Most people don’t usually give a sh-t about songs like this.”
