Ranking MCU Sequels: From 'Eternals' to 'Fantastic Four'

Marvel Studios has a history of teasing future developments in their movies, but not all sequel hints pan out. We rank the most likely MCU sequels based on their chances of happening.

Marvel Studios has always been adept at keeping one eye on the future, tantalizing fans with hints of what's to come in their sprawling cinematic universe.

Maintaining such a vast, interconnected franchise is no small feat, so Kevin Feige and his team meticulously plan ahead to ensure everything falls into place. A significant part of this involves laying the groundwork for future developments in their movies, whether it's a post-credits stinger teasing the launch of the Avengers Initiative or Doctor Doom's arrival at the end of 'Fantastic Four'. For nearly two decades, Marvel fans have been conditioned to scrutinize every movie and show for sequel teases.

However, even the best-laid plans can change, and Marvel has had to adjust their plans, scrapping previously announced films. The Multiverse Saga has taught fans that a tease doesn't guarantee a follow-through. Several post-credits scenes in recent years hint at developments that may never materialize, despite high-profile actors appearing. With that in mind, let's rank the MCU sequels that have been set up based on their likelihood of happening.

'Eternals' was one of the first films in the Multiverse Saga, introducing audiences to a new team of superheroes. With Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao at the helm and Marvel's track record with ensemble casts, expectations were high. Unfortunately, 'Eternals' didn't meet those expectations, becoming the first MCU movie to receive a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The reception likely caught Marvel off guard, as the film left threads open for a sequel.

The movie ends with Arishem taking Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos into a singularity, and the post-credits scene introduces Eros, brother of Thanos, who could have been another storyline for a sequel. However, the chances of an 'Eternals' sequel happening are extremely low, which is why it's at the bottom of our list.

In contrast, 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' earned stronger reviews and became a new fan-favorite entry in the MCU. It impressed critics with its thrilling action scenes and strong performances. Star Simu Liu's titular hero seemed poised to become one of the new faces of the MCU, especially following a post-credits scene that introduced Shang-Chi to the likes of Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers.

After grossing $432.2 million worldwide during the pandemic, a sequel seemed like a safe bet. However, it's been delayed due to director Destin Daniel Cretton's availability, as he's been busy with other MCU projects. Whether Marvel actually moves forward with it could depend on how Shang-Chi is received in future appearances.

'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' underperformed at the box office, grossing $382.4 million worldwide against a budget of $180 million. If the New Avengers leave a strong impression on viewers in future appearances, Marvel will likely feel confident about pushing ahead with a standalone sequel
