The Rangers have transferred pitcher Jacob deGrom to the 60-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. deGrom has been placed on the IL 12 times since 2020. He's eligible to come off the IL on June 28.
DeGrom’s move to the 60-day injured list tells us two things. First, with his return from an elbow injury not yet imminent, the Rangers opened a roster spot by transferring their star pitcher to the long-term list. Now, deGrom is technically not taking up a 40-man roster spot.Texas then used that spot to activate right-hander Howard, once one of the Phillies’ top prospects. Howard has been on the 60-day IL since spring training with a muscle strain on his right side near the ribs.
and he was set to return to Texas on Monday. Other than that leave, deGrom has been throwing bullpen sessions, five of them, according to the Dallas Morning News. But deGrom has not yet started throwing to hitters, manager Bruce Bochy said. That would leave his comeback probably several weeks away. During spring training, the Rangers similarly displayed patience with deGrom as he returned from a side soreness injury. At the time, the Rangers said they would not push deGrom back from injury out of desperation.
And the Rangers at the moment are certainly not desperate. They possess the second-best record in the majors and remain 3 1/2 games ahead of theEventually, the Rangers will want their ace back in the rotation. But they want him to stay there this time. So for now, they will allow him more time to heal a risky elbow injury. —Rangers general manager Chris Young said that the team would go through further testing with deGrom and “proceed cautiously” regarding his return.
“And secondly, that this is something I believe just at the core of the organization that success should be sustained. When players go down and we’ve been able to prove that, losing Corey , losing Jacob and — certainly you don’t want to lose too many of them,” he continued.
