Welcome to March. It’s madness, we hear. But it’s also time to start counting down the Rangers’ top 30 prospects. Why stop at 30, though? 33 just sounds...
Saggese, who turns 21 on April 10, was the Rangers’ fifth-round choice in the shortened 2020 draft out of Carlsbad High School. He received $800,000 to bypass a commitment to Pepperdine University.Saggese will not bowl anybody over with raw tools. He’s got a slight, scruffy look. But don’t take your eyes off him. He’s just a classic, throwback kind of player who finds a way to contribute. As a pro, he has a .291/.365/.490/.855 slash line.
And after the season, he was handed the “True Ranger” award for being a shining example of their core values on and off the field.: He’s the kind of player who probably represents more value to the Rangers than to others in a trade, which may be a bit of good luck for the organization. All the metrics grade out nicely, including defense, though even Rangers’ personnel will acknowledge that at first gaze things may look “ordinary.” He just knows how to play the game.
