Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner acquired from the New York Mets on July 30, had gone 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts and 45 innings for the...
An arm injury is a new issue for Scherzer, who turned 39 in July. Since making his MLB debut in 2008, he has 448 starts, third among all active pitchers. The only injury that forced him to miss significant time was an oblique issue that limited him to 23 starts in 2022.. The Rangers now have five Cy Youngs on the sidelines. DeGrom is not expected to return until the second half of the 2024 season. Scherzer is also signed through 2024.
Now the Rangers must figure out how to try to fill the void created by the loss of Scherzer. Nathan Eovaldi, who is still building up his pitch count after missing six weeks with his own forearm issue, likely becomes the Rangers’ No. 1 starter and would be followed in a playoff rotation by Jon Gray and Jordan Montgomery in some fashion.
To get there, though, the Rangers must navigate the final two-plus weeks of the season and will likely have to move a deposed starter from the bullpen back to the rotation. The leading options: Andrew Heaney and Martín Pérez. Heaney,Pérez, moved to the bullpen in early August after the acquisitions of Scherzer and Montgomery, has thrown more than 50 pitches just once since moving to the bullpen. It may be challenging to ask him to throw more than 60-75 pitches in a start.
