A couple of little inconvenient truths about spring training: It’s not about the warming of the weather, the intimacy of back-field interactions or answering...

made 11 starts in 2022. Andrew Heaney made 14; Nathan Eovaldi 20 and Jon Gray 24. They combined to spend 354 days on the IL a year ago. deGrom, alone, has missed 210 days over the last two seasons. The Rangers spent nearly a quarter of a billion dollars on them over the winter. Health isn’t just important; it’s critical. It will require the Rangers to take some extra steps in spring.

The key is pitchers come to camp without any restrictions. That is one area where the Rangers don’t have major concerns. Of the seven veteran starters — Martín Pérez, Jon Gray, Jake Odorizzi and Dane Dunning are the others — only Dunning spent the winter rehabbing. , so they could make two or three outings away from camp. The Rangers expect Pérez to have made three starts and gone at least four innings in one by the time he departs for the WBC where pitchers will be on a four-inning, 65-pitch limit in the first round. Team USA is expected to be even more conservative with pitch counts, so Eovaldi should reach that with two starts.

Their absence will not be without some ancillary benefits. Dunning, Glenn Otto and Cole Ragans will get more attention and priority while the others are out. It gives the Rangers a real chance to build up seven or eight starters so that if they do have a spring training injury, they should be better suited to cover for it.

“Ultimately, I want to come out of this with everybody healthy,” Young said. “I also realize that may not be realistic. But with our depth, I think we’re in a better spot now. Everyone feels good coming in. And I want them to feel good coming out.”
