had a good one. Again. The 31-year-old left-hander pitched seven innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out three batters. He retired 10 consecutive Baltimore batters in between the third and sixth innings before Orioles left fielder Austin Hays led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to right center field, the lone blemish on Heaney’s ledger.and Nathan Eovaldi, has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts and has a 3.26 ERA in the month of May.
That — alongside a prolific offense — has been the recent trend for Texas. Its starting pitchers have a 2.99 ERA in May and the league’s lowest ERA in its last 21 games. “We’re all rolling, we’re all kind of talking about it,” Heaney said. “It’s just really nice. You see Jon [Gray] do what he did yesterday. Even though we’re opposite handed, [it] kind [of] gives us a good idea of what those guys are doing over there.”
But what’s a good pitcher without a good defense behind him? After Heaney hit Ryan Mountcastle with a pitch to lead off the second inning, a groundout to shortstop Corey Seager was turned for a double play. Orioles catcher James McCann followed with a double to right field and, after an Adam Frazier single to right field, was sent home by Baltimore third base coach Tony Mansolino.
“I remember looking to my right and thinking, ‘I hope they send [McCann]’ and they did,” Heaney said.The Rangers will hope that the rest of the league does not receive the memo.
