ARLINGTON — Standing on the mound Saturday at Globe Life Field, Rangers right-hander Jonathan Hernández took a deep breath, causing his shoulders to creep up...
And it provided a gratifying end to a long recovery process for a player who hadn’t pitched in the majors since Sept. 27, 2020.
Hernández helped Rangers relievers pitch four scoreless innings from the sixth through the ninth after starter Spencer Howard gave up two runs across five innings. In the 10th, the Mariners scored the ghost runner to take a one-run lead. The Rangers failed to answer in the bottom of the inning and absorbed another blow in a season full of narrow defeats, leaving manager Chris Woodward irked.
In recent weeks, as Hernández finished his rehab, the Rangers struggled to find a mix of pitchers that could aid their taxed bullpen and stop a pattern of one-score losses. Right-hander A.J. Alexy on Saturday became the latest reliever to return to the minors after he allowed three runs over two innings a day earlier in his first Major League outing of the year.
After his long breath Saturday, Hernández stepped into action with the Rangers facing a 2-1 deficit. He forced the first batter he faced into a ground out. The next two hit the ball hard — one singled and another lined out — and then Hernández offered a glimpse into his potential by striking out Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez on a cutter that darted into the dirt. The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
