Toronto Blue Jays' Teoscar Hernandez celebrates his three-run home run with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as Texas Rangers catcher Mitch Garver waits during the fifth inning of a baseball game Friday, April 8, 2022, in Toronto. TORONTO — They play 162 for a reason, right? The story of a baseball team takes time to bloom. The strengths must ripen over months. It takes a spell for flaws to be exposed.

“I think we just let them back in the game by giving them some free passes,” manager Chris Woodward said. “We put a ton of pressure on them early, jumped out early, got [starter] Jose Berríos out of the game and into their bullpen right away. But they are a good offense. Hernandez started the go-ahead rally with a two-out walk. It was the third straight inning in which the Jays scored on a rally that began with a two out walk. It also came in his plate appearance following a two-out, three-run game-tying homer off Josh Sborz. Sborz, whose out pitch is a slider, threw three straight fastballs to Hernandez, two of them above the strike zone and a third towards the top. He clobbered it.

“They are an emotional team,” Woodward said. “They feed off of that. Every good offense does, but especially that young group over there. They smell that they got a chance to get back in the game and they capitalize on it.” At least the Rangers got the first inning better than a year ago. Remember that one? They took a 5-0 lead. It didn’t last through the bottom of the inning at Kansas City. Small steps.
