Dallas Cowboys Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay visits with owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president and CEO Stephen Jones as they watch training camp practice in Oxnard, California, August 2, 2022.It’s not every August that the Rangers steal the front page and the conversation from the Cowboys. Admittedly, it won’t last long, but there’s one thing that happened this past week at Globe Life Field that separates the Cowboys from their local rivals — and not in a good way..
Fast forward to this past week. The Rangers were 52-64 on Wednesday when owner Ray Davis turned Monday’s managerial firing into the calm before the storm by, who had taken the reins from John Hart as GM in 2005. I’m not sure this Rangers team, even with a nearly identical record to the ‘94 squad, is two years away from winning the West, but one never knows about these things. The Astros’ ability to replace and replenish is about to expire.
Tom, Tex and Gil all vanished from Valley Ranch in the winter and spring of 1989. The three men, who had guided an expansion franchise to the pinnacle with five Super Bowl appearances in the 1970′s, were out at the end of the 1980′s. A rich guy from Arkansas we didn’t know and a bunch of college coaches arrived to replace the legends.
After 26 seasons of failure to reach the NFC Championship Game, the Jones Boys still think they have the secret sauce. They practically print money but rarely print playoff tickets. They bestow almost GM-like authority on vice president of player personnel Will McClay, pay him handsomely not to leave Dallas for a real GM job, but can never bring themselves to place that title on him or anyone else.
