Texas Rangers pitcher Jon Gray extended his hot streak and avoided injury against the Seattle Mariners.
After Gray struck out Harry Ford, he hit No. 9 hitter Jose Caballero with a slider that ran a little too far inside. All Gray did was pick him off at first base to end the inning. It’s a veteran manager’s favorite cliché —but the Rangers, now 16 games over .500 and 12-5 against American League West opponents, have shown an aptitude for both. Rangers’ starting pitchers have the second-best ERA in MLB this season and just finished a month where it was 3.16.
He hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in any of his last five starts and lowered his season ERA to 2.51.It must be. Especially on a night like Friday which developed into the pitchers duel it was billed to be. Seattle starter Luis Castillo, a two-time All-Star, took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and looked largely untouchable against Texas’ league-leading offense early.
In their third plate appearances? Semien turned a Castillo sinker around for a single to leadoff the sixth inning, and Seager did the same to a Castillo changeup in the next at bat. Lowe drove in Semien with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 1-0.
