Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi throws during the third inning of a baseball game against Kansas City Royals at Globe Life Field on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 in Arlington .ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — He said in July, after spinning a gem vs. the Houston Astros, that big games — games with some stakes, games with some atmosphere — just amp him up a little bit more.on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series.
Now, let’s be honest: Three months ago, a meaningful Eovaldi start would’ve felt a touch more like a slam dunk. He’s just struggled to replicate his All-Star form sincewas the right man to start the series opener “He’s been through all the highest-pressure situations you can be in,” second baseman Marcus Semien said Tuesday. “He’s a World Series champion. He’s the leader of that starting staff, in my opinion. That’s why the Rangers signed Eovaldi to a two-year, $34 million deal in December — to be, alongside two-time Cy Young Award winner deGrom, guy come postseason time. For the first 3 1/2 months of the regular season, he looked like it.
He allowed a season-high seven earned runs in his final regular season start, a 3 2/3-inning outing against the Seattle Mariners on Friday. It’s harsh on paper, harsher considering the importance of the game. And yet, there were positives. Positives, at least, regarding how Eovaldi may perform in Wednesday’s game.
