The Rangers didn’t quite know what to make of Kiner-Falefa, so they tried to make him a little bit of everything, even a catcher. What they ended up with waswho has done the almost impossible: Started at least 50 MLB games each as a catcher, third baseman and shortstop. And since being shipped off to the New York Yankees , he’s added the outfield to the mix. He’s been a versatile contributor now for nearly six years and is on the verge of a 10 career WAR.
, which did its job well in plucking him from Dartmouth in 2011. He’s produced like a first-rounder: 22.1 WAR. Only two starters from that draft – Gerritt Cole, the overall No. 1, and Sonny Gray, 18th overall – have higher career WARs. Hendricks won an ERA title and has four seasons of at least 180 innings. A workhorse, top-of-the-rotation starter? That’s a steal.
