William Paul reportedly confronted the New York Democrat over an upcoming GOP primary in Kentucky.
William Paul's apology about the incident, shared to his X account, follows a wave of antisemitic incidents across the United States in recent years, which lawmakers have sought to tackle as the White House has continued the country's support for Israel in conflicts in the Middle East.
Paul, 33, said he would be seeking help for his drinking following the initial report on the rant in which he was said to have confronted Lawler about Representative's primary election in Kentucky next week, before saying he believed Jewish people were"anti-American," per NOTUS. Paul's father is a Kentucky senator.
"Last night, I had too much to drink and said some things that don’t represent who I really am. I’m sorry and today I am seeking help for my drinking problem,"Paul was reported to have approached Lawler in a D.C. bar and restaurant Tuesday night, where NOTUS reporter Reese Gorman was sitting with the New York Congressman. According to Gorman, Paul said that if Massie lost, it would be because of"your people," prompting Lawler to ask who he meant.
"Yeah, you Jews," was Paul's alleged response. Lawler, who is not Jewish, told Paul as much, with the senator's son saying he was sorry for calling him a Jew before continuing on what the reporter called a tirade about how Jews were"anti-American" and that Lawler and his Jewish supporters served Israel more than the U.S. On Wednesday, Lawler recounted a similar version of events to reporters on the steps of the Capitol Building, calling the ten-minute rant, in which Paul allegedly also said he didn't care if Jews and gay people died,"f****** disgusting".
"I think it speaks to a larger issue, obviously, in society, and what we're seeing among young people, what we see online," Lawler said. "This is the level of hatred and vitriol frankly that some of my Jewish colleagues experience, but many of my constituents experience.
"Representative Thomas Massie is facing the most serious primary challenge of his career in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, as a Trump-backed Republican opponent has turned a typically safe seat into a nationally watched political showdown. Massie is being challenged by Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, and the race has become a proxy battle over the direction of the Republican Party, pitting a GOP member who has often spoken out against President Donald Trump against a candidate loyal to the president.
Senator Paul has emerged as Massie's most prominent and consistent ally, saying in October that he would support him"every step of the way". He has appeared on the campaign trail alongside Massie, with the pair aligned on policies such as opposing large-scale federal spending and skepticism of foreign intervention. Lawler vowed to continue to stand up for Jewish people, while Paul said he would seek help for his drinking.
