President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act into law, but deferred the implementation of two crucial definitions: 'reticulation' and 'distribution power systems'. This mirrors a similar postponement with the Basic Education Laws Amendments (Bela) Act, where Ramaphosa extended the implementation of provisions related to school governing boards by three months.

“In terms of section 33 of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act, 2024 , I hereby fix January 1, 2025 as the date on which the said Act shall come into operation, save for amendments to the definitions of 'reticulation' and 'distribution power systems' in section 1 of that Act, which definitions shall come into operation on a date to be determined by the President by Proclamation in the Government Gazette,” the notice read.

In one of his recent statements, Ramaphosa stated the regulator may consider factors such as security of supply, the diversity of supply and the promotion of renewable energy.
