President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Warsaw, Poland for the start of the African peace mission.

Along with the heads of state from Egypt, Congo, Zambia, Senegal, and Uganda, Ramaphosa is set to make the arduous journey to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.The leaders are expected to meet with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days in an attempt to broker a peace deal in the region.
Ramaphosa announced the African leaders’ peace mission last month as the continent feels the pinch of rising living costs brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.South Africa, in turn, is feeling the heat of its non-aligned stance towards Russia - a long-standing ally dating back to the apartheid years.
It will be the meeting with Putin over the weekend that will be closely watched, as Ramaphosa also seeks to balance tensions over the Russian leader’s pending visit to South Africa for the BRICS Summit in August. Ramaphosa announced the African leaders’ peace mission last month as the continent feels the pinch of rising living costs brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
