Ramaphosa defends Mabuza’s sojourn to Russia

Answering a question from the leader of the DA, John Steenhuisen, on whether Mabuza’s trip to Russia was paid for by taxpayers, Ramaphosa said Mabuza was entitled to security, transport and accommodation wherever he was.

Wherever the deputy president or the president goes, transportation is the responsibility of the government“[The] deputy president is entitled to security wherever he is; [so is] the president, because they don’t choose to be continuously shadowed by security people. It is a requirement because ... when we are in positions that we are in, we are state property. It is what comes with the jobs,” said Ramaphosa.

“Wherever the deputy president or the president goes, transportation is the responsibility of the government. When they are flying, it is the responsibility of the air force. When travelling on the ground, it is the responsibility of presidential protection police,” he said.Ramaphosa said that if it were his choice, he would prefer to drive himself.
