For instance, it again highlights the plausibility of ‘engineered load-shedding’ as a political tool in the country. This was the assertion of former President Thabo Mbeki, who said the lights were deliberately kept off by Eskom during 2008 to bring about a regime change to Jacob Zuma in 2009.
Last year, Mbeki reiterated his allegation by saying, “Load-shedding in 2008 was caused on purpose because power stations were not replenished with coal. The power stations ran out of coal. It was not because there was no coal in the country. Nevertheless, the ANC attributes the 2024 load-shedding miracle to sustained improvements to its generating fleet, a rigorous maintenance regime and less unplanned outages.
