Ralph Macchio is open to doing another KarateKid movie at some point. 'I am not closing the door on anything.'
The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio reveals in an interview that he is open to starring in another Karate Kid film with a few conditions. Macchio starred as main character Daniel Russo in the 1984 martial arts drama, as well as its subsequent sequels in 1986 and 1989. He later reprised his role in 2018 alongside Willliam Zabka for the YouTube Red series Cobra Kai, before Netflix acquired the show for its third season and beyond in 2020.
Macchio first played Daniel Russo in The Karate Kid, beginning the trilogy as the high school teen who moves to California, learning martial arts from his apartment building's handyman Mr. Miyagi after being harassed by bullies from the local dojo, Cobra Kai. Russo enters a tournament, defeating his bully and top Cobra Kai student Johnny Lawrence .
"I am not closing the door on anything. Once this worked on this level, I would be foolish to say, “But that won’t work.” I am open to all that — of course, with the right content and execution. Even though they say, “Cobra Kai never dies,” at some point, we will have to wind up this series and tie up the stories properly. And hopefully, Netflix gives us that opportunity to finish it and then is up for other chapters in other ways.
The Karate Kid franchise continued after Daniel's story with 1994's The Next Karate Kid, with Maccio previously saying a cameo by Hillary Swank's Julie Pierce could work in Cobra Kai. Pierce was Miyagi's student in the fourth film whom he met in Boston, a rebellious teen struggling with the death of her parents. A remake/reboot of The Karate Kid was made in 2010 starring Jaden Smith as Dre Parker, who studies under Jackie Chan's Mr.
Though a new film in the Karate Kid saga following Daniel may be interesting to some fans, as of now it might seem unnecessary. Cobra Kai has already revisited both Daniel and Johnny after the saga, exploring their legacies and introducing a new generation in a well-crafted way. However, much like Macchio suggested, a new installment following the series' ending could be used to give Daniel's story a resolution entirely focused on his character. .
