Rain and gusty winds will soak Northeast Ohio before Halloween and the start of high school football playoffs.
Have the rain gear ready to go! Rain is likely all day Thursday in Northeast Ohio, with 1 to 2 inches expected in some areas.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Northeast Ohio’s stretch of calm fall weather will come to an end Wednesday night as widespread rain moves in from the south, ushering in a windy, unsettled pattern that will linger through the weekend.
High pressure centered over eastern Canada will slide east Wednesday as a strengthening storm system tracks north from the Tennessee Valley. Clouds will continue to increase through the afternoon, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 50s across the region — near seasonal averages for late October.. The rain will turn steady to at times heavy late overnight into Thursday as Gulf moisture lifts northward into the region. Rain and increasing winds arrive tonight and continue through Thursday night. The rain will then transition to lake effect showers through the weekend. The strongest wind gusts will impact areas closer to Lake Erie, where gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph Thursday into Friday.Forecasters expect a soaking rain through much of Thursday, with widespread totals approaching or exceeding an inch by Thursday night. The combination of the deepening low pressure system and a strong pressure gradient off Lake Erie also will bring gusty winds, especially near the shoreline. Gusts of 40 to 45 mph are possible Thursday into Friday along the lake from Lorain County east into Pennsylvania. A wind advisory may be issued if these trends continue, forecasters noted. Daytime highs on Thursday will only climb into the upper 40s and low 50s, with the winds making it feel colder.Widespread rain returns to Northeast Ohio Wednesday night, followed by gusty winds Thursday and lingering lake-effect showers through the weekend. The steady rain will taper off from west to east late Thursday night into early Friday as the main storm system lifts toward New England. Behind it, cooler air flowing over the still-warm waters of Lake Erie will fuel rounds of lake-effect rain showers through the weekend, especially across the snowbelt in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties. Low temperatures Thursday night in the mid 30s to mid 40s will give way to high temperatures Friday in the upper 40s to lower 50s.Friday evening, conditions should improve compared with Thursday, though some lingering clouds and spotty light showers can’t be ruled out, mainly near the lakeshore and in the higher elevations east of Cleveland. Temperatures will hover in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees during the evening, so layers or light jackets will be a good idea.Friday night. Most areas should stay dry for kickoff, but damp fields and a cool northwest breeze could make for a brisk night under the lights.Saturday will bring a brief lull in the active weather pattern for much of Northeast Ohio as high pressure begins to build in from the west. Most areas away from the snowbelt should see a mix of clouds and some filtered sunshine, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Light west winds and lingering lake-effect showers east of Cleveland — mainly in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties — could keep those areas damp at times, but rainfall should stay light. Saturday night looks cool and calm under partly cloudy skies, with lows dipping into the mid 30s inland and upper 30s to low 40s near the lakeshore. Sunday may start off quiet, though another weak system could bring a return of clouds and a few scattered showers by evening or Sunday night. Afternoon highs will again reach the low 50s, right on par for early November. Temperatures will hold near seasonal averages into early next week, with highs in the 50s and additional chances for showers as another system approaches from the west. Will trick-or-treat be a washout?
