Mayor Kirk Watson acknowledged the potential severity of the weekend's weather, stating, "There's a clear recognition of the severity of what this weekend could hold." Travis County Judge Andy Brown emphasized the unpredictability of Texas weather, saying, "We are preparing for the worst because we never completely know what the weather is going to do in Texas." The National Weather Service has predicted ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch, which could make travel difficult, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways.In response, road crews have been pre-treating roads with a brine solution. Richard Mendoza, Austin Transportation & Public Works Director, assured residents that the solution "won't wash away" and that engineers are stationed throughout the city to monitor conditions. Antonio Lujan from the Texas Department of Transportation explained, "It actually starts to activate when it starts to get wet. So it's actually a good thing. It will start doing its job." Despite these preparations, Mendoza cautioned that freezing rain could still lead to icy roads, noting, "Those conditions can always be spotty in nature." Mayor Watson advised residents to avoid travel, stating, "Don’t be on the streets."Crews will be working in 12-hour shifts to monitor and address road conditions as needed.
