'This is not about increasing fares,' the Transport Secretary insisted as he announced the new trial
Rail fares are to fluctuate based on demand like airline tickets, and single journeys will always be half the cost of a return, under plans announced by Transport SecretaryHe announced plans to trial a system through which fares on some London North Eastern Railway services will fluctuate depending on how many people want to travel as he pledged to boost the role of the private sector in Britain’s “financially unsustainable” railways.
He said: “The impact on the industry’s bottom line has been stark, with revenue about £125-175m lower each month as costs keep rising year on year.“But the railways have only survived due to the public purse – the source of over 70 per cent of income over the past two years, at a cost of £1,000 per household.
“The next Labour Government will put passengers back at the heart of our railways, and build the infrastructure fit for the century ahead, unlocking jobs and growth.”
