All diesel trains must be removed from the railways by 2040

The region's biggest rail operator will have to replace three-quarters of its trains to meet government targets, the Manchester Evening News can reveal.

As part of the plan, certain train lines in the North including the Hope Valley line between Sheffield and Manchester would be electrified. However, according to data from the Department for Transport , there are still 2,900 diesel-only vehicles operating across the country. Part of the problem for Northern is that the rail operator runs trains on rural lines which are harder to electrify. According to a former director at the firm, some of these routes have 'no prospects' of being electrified with overhead cables which means the operator will have to look at battery technology instead.

The Prime Minister’s recent plans for electrification in the north committed to bring Hull into Northern Powerhouse Rail, electrify the line between Hull to Leeds and Hull to Sheffield, to upgrade and electrify the line between Sheffield and Leeds, and to electrify the Hope Valley line between Sheffield to Manchester.
