Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital a neglected mess - Health ombud finds
Dirty, filthy and unsafe are some words used to describe the environment at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.
There were complaints that expectant mothers slept on the floor, the CEO only spent 183 days at the hospital and the patients' dignity was disregarded. We had a group of us going there for on-site visits, did personal interviews and analysed all documents we could find. Pipes at the hospital were broken and paint fell apart, with sewage spilling all over.
“It’s very disturbing that a highly specialised hospital that looks after mothers and babies has no laboratory service, no blood bank or intensive care unit. You can’t run such a hospital without a 24-hour laboratory service. The hospital also had one CAT scan, which does not seem to function but apparently, it has been sorted out. There is no hospital board and there are security challenges with cars being stolen at the hospital parking.
Also, a comprehensive implementation plan is to be submitted to the ombud within six months, including detailed realistic strategies, time frame and names, designations and contact details of the persons responsible for implementation.Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said they would need to study the report in detail before they could respond comprehensively to the matters identified.
