WIMBLEDON, England—Rafael Nadal’s bid for a 23rd major title and a calendar-year Grand Slam came to a painful halt on Thursday as he withdrew from Wimbledon with an injury just one day before he was due to play in the semifinals.through a five-set victory over Taylor Fritz in the quarters, said that he had sustained an abdominal tear and couldn’t go on in the tournament.
Now, Kyrgios has reached his first Grand Slam final in a week when it also emerged that he will have to answerNadal said he had been carrying the abdominal issue for a week, but it flared up early in Wednesday’s match, prompting him to request a visit from the trainer. By the end of the second set, he was grimacing on nearly every point. Nadal struggled to cope with anything to his backhand side and his serve all but abandoned him.
From the moment he came off the court, Nadal was casting doubt on whether he might play again in this tournament. “I don’t know,” was his only answer when asked if he’d be fit enough for a semifinal. Once he had the trophy in hand, however, he admitted that he wouldn’t put himself through the same ordeal again. Something about his condition would need to improve.
