The clay court master announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing from the French Open as he battles a lingering hip injury that has impacted him since January.
Nadal, 36, won his 14th title at Roland Garros a year ago, defeating Casper Ruud in a dominant finals performance.
Nadal, who also won the Australian Open last year, saw his title defense end in Melbourne with a second-round loss to Mackenzie McDonald.Nadal made the announcement at his tennis academy in Manacor, Spain.
