With it, Nadal added the distinction of becoming the oldest man in history to win the French Open while embellishing another incomprehensible mark by improving his career record at Roland Garros to 112-3. He may take an extended break to recover, skipping Wimbledon, as he did last year. He may retire, having twice alluded to the possibility this may be his last French Open.
The crowd rose when Nadal strode onto court, and the chants of “Rafa! Rafa!” built to crescendo as the announcer listed each of the 13 years in which Nadal claimed the championship. The king of Spain and crown prince of Norway sat side-by-side in the President’s Tribune. Sporting royalty was also on hand, NBA star Pau Gasol, a friend and compatriot of Nadal’s, and tennis champions Billie Jean King, Stefan Edberg, Stan Smith and Gustavo Kuerten.
