The morning after Martin Luther King Day, a resident at the Hamden Greene apartments found a front lawn littered with items with items locals believe have racist connotations: including watermelon, fried chicken, grape Kool-Aid packets, and cotton balls.

Several said the discovery was both shocking and disturbing, particularly given the diverse nature of the community. “I would say that people need to be more culturally sensitive to what goes on in this country,” said Jonathan, a resident of the complex. “Coming from my background and my history, something like that can definitely be perceived as being racist.” The individual who found the display said it was reported to the nearby leasing office and that they expected management to notify police. While the leasing office removed most of the items from the lawn, police were not made aware of the situation at the time. The leasing office manager said she was “disheartened” by the situation. She was unable to answer why she didn’t contact authorities. After receiving the photo Wednesday, Sergeant Derrick Siegfried with the Hamden County Police Department said they will be looking into the incident further. “With the knowledge of this now, we’ll see if there is any information we can obtain regarding the incident: the particulars - where, when, who, how - and ensure we’re covering all bases,” said Sergeant Seigfried. Hampden Township consistently ranked as one of Pennsylvania's safest areas. Sergeant Seigfried said locals should know this was likely an isolated incident, “we are very welcoming to all demographics.” Their investigation will begin by contacting the leasing office and looking for security footage, according to the Sergeant.“I thought this neighborhood was quite safe from racism. To me, that’s a very scary idea,” said one tenant.“Even if it could be completely innocent. Rather be safe than sorry, obviously. And if you report it, we can take care of it,” said Officer Seigfried.A Waynesboro elementary school principal is fighting for his job after the school board voted to demote him to teacher following some serious allegationsWinter storm threat increasing this weekend A significant storm system will track across the central and eastern US as we head through the second half of the week.
