The comment came as two ATC board members criticised the club’s handling of the proposed sale of the racecourse for housing and predicted an overwhelming majority of members would vote against it.

The boss of the Australian Turf Club has blamed the “high Indian population” around Parramatta for declining crowds at Rosehill Racecourse as part of his justification for wanting to sell the track to developers for up to 25,000 new homes.

He denied a characterisation by upper house member Mark Latham that he had said words to the effect of “there are too many Indians living in the Parramatta region”. McGauran and the ATC’s corporate affairs director Steve McMahon stood by their prior estimates that a metro station, plus rezoning for residential development, would increase the site’s value to about $5 billion. McGauran said the current unimproved value was $1.6 billion.
