André Hanscombe recounts the moment he told his two-year-old son Alex that his mother Rachel was dead after she was stabbed 49 times in a London park in 1992. The new Netflix documentary also covers the flawed investigation and eventual conviction of Robert Napper.
André Hanscombe , the partner of Rachel Nickell who was brutally murdered in front of their two-year-old son Alex on Wimbledon Common in 1992, has shared the harrowing moment he told his son that his mother was dead.
In a new Netflix documentary, The Murder of Rachel Nickell, Hanscombe recounts the aftermath of the attack, during which Nickell was stabbed 49 times and sexually assaulted while walking her dog. Alex was found by a passerby repeatedly saying Wake up Mummy and was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises. Hanscombe recalls how he followed a psychologist's advice and told Alex simply: Mummy's dead, she's not coming back.
The boy just stared, never asking again about his mother, as if he already understood. The documentary includes home videos of Nickell and Hanscombe with their son, as well as interviews with Alex, now 33, who still grapples with the trauma of witnessing the murder. Hanscombe also details the moment he learned of the tragedy. He received a call from a policeman who said there had been an accident.
Instantly knowing the worst, Hanscombe collapsed to the floor, describing the experience as bordering on insanity. He then moved with Alex to rural France to start a new life and protect Alex, who was the only witness and thus in danger while the killer remained free. The case initially focused on Colin Stagg, who was wrongly arrested and spent 13 months in custody before being freed in 1994. The judge criticized police for using a honeytrap operation.
Stagg later received £706,000 compensation for the bungled investigation. The murder was finally solved in 2008, when Robert Napper, a convicted murderer, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility and was detained indefinitely at Broadmoor Hospital. Advanced DNA techniques had identified him as the killer in 2002. The documentary explores the long-lasting impact on the family, with Alex now speaking about his mother's murder for the first time.
It also highlights the flaws in the original police investigation and the suffering of both the Nickell family and the wrongly accused Stagg. The film aims to provide a comprehensive look at one of Britain's most notorious crimes and its aftermath
