Today is the first annual Pennsylvania Horse Racing Caregivers Appreciation Day.
The backbone of the horse racing industry, the caregivers who work year-round looking after thoroughbreds, were recognized Wednesday as part of the first annual Pennsylvania Horse Racing Caregivers Appreciation Day.They are watched over by a small army of grooms, hot walkers and exercise riders who work 365 days a year feeding and caring for the horses.
A number of caregivers live in dorms located on the backside of the racetrack in close proximity to the horses living in the stable barns. “These men and women spend more time caring for and nurturing these horses than anyone else,” said Todd Mostoller, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. “It takes a lot of commitment to be with these horses from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year ensuring they are properly fed, exercised, and groomed. It’s more than career, it’s a vocation and we appreciate all that these caregivers do for our equine athletes.
