Original R.E.M. members surprise fans at an album tribute show in Athens, Georgia, marking the first time in nearly two decades they've performed together in their hometown.
The original members of R.E.M. , including Michael Stipe, made a surprise appearance on stage at a tribute show in their hometown of Athens , Georgia. They joined Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, who were performing an album tribute to R.E.M. 's third LP, 'Fables of the Reconstruction.' This brief reunion marked the first time in nearly 20 years that all four members of the legendary band had performed together in Athens .
The last time they played together in their hometown was at the 40 Watt Club on September 12, 2006. Since the band disbanded in 2011, other members Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry have played in Athens, but not always together. While they all still live or spend time in the city, Michael Stipe has been harder to find. Earlier this year, the band was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City where they performed an acoustic version of their 1991 hit, 'Losing My Religion.' However, a full-fledged R.E.M. reunion may be a long shot. In an interview with CBS Mornings, the band joked that it would take 'super glue' or 'a comet' to get them back together.
