Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The feud between Barbie and Oppenheimer was reignited at the Oscars, after Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling spoke out about their mid-summer box office competition.
Both movies were released on July 21, 2023, drawing comparisons, despite their different genres. Barbie tells the story of a plastic woman who enters the real world and discovers that she has not made the impact that she expected. Oppenheimer depicts the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the Atomic Bomb. Their rivalry seemingly ended after Oppenheimer achieved over $900 million at the box office, while Barbie earned $1.4 billion. At the Oscars, however, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling elected to bring new life to the rivalry. At the Oscars, Screen Rant can report that Blunt, who was a member of the Oppenheimer cast, proudly stated that "It wasn't much of a rivalry." Beside her, Gosling, who played Ken in Barbie, proclaimed "You were riding Barbie's coattails all summer." The two were presenting together on-stage as they playfully joked about their rivalry. Who Won The Barbie And Oppenheimer Rivalry? Close The Barbie and Oppenheimer rivalry dominated the box office in 2023. Oppenheimer impressed with a $960 million box office take on a budget of $100 million, but it failed to reach the heights of Barbie. Financially, Barbie was as explosive as Oppenheimer's bomb, as the movie earned $1.446 billion on a budget of under $150 million. Both still proved to be remarkably financially successful, but Barbie finished nearly $500 million ahead. In terms of critical and audience responses, however, Oppenheimer was the winner. On Rotten Tomatoes, the biopic secured a 93 percent Tomatometer score and a 91 percent audience score at the time of writing. By contrast, Barbie earned an 88 percent Tomatometer score and an 83 from audiences. The early Barbie reviews were still glowing, even if Oppenheimer earned more respect from critics. With financial and critical success at odds, there is no obvious winner between the two movies, which is why Blunt and Gosling are still willing to joke about the rivalry between them. The competition has even extended to the Oscars, where Barbie and Oppenheimer are competing for Best Picture. While Gosling and Blunt may have different ideas about who is leading the Barbenheimer rivalry, the 2024 Oscars could forever decide which movie deserves the most praise.
