Band of Brothers producer Steven Spielberg put the Easy Company actors through a brutal bootcamp before filming, but the effort was worthwhile.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Band of Brothers’ focus on historical accuracy is part of what makes the show great, but it led to a hellish two weeks of training for its main cast. The series, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, tells the real-life story of Easy Company, the paratrooper regiment whose World War 2 journey took them from training in Atlanta, Georgia, all the way to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Germany.

Spielberg was no stranger to the war epic when he embarked upon Band of Brothers; his previous outing, Saving Private Ryan, is hailed as one of the best war movies ever made. Yet Band of Brothers tells a far larger story; while Saving Private Ryan follows a small group of soldiers on a contained mission, Band of Brothers follows an entire regiment on a European campaign.

Gomez wasn’t far off. The training was a brutal affair. Dressed in period-appropriate fatigues, including boots which “felt like they were made out of corrugated tin,” the actors were put through arduous, 18-hour days. Each day started at 6am with a five-mile run, followed by various types of training, including orienteering, firearm drills, tactical maneuvers, and mock firefights. Nights were segmented into two hours of sleep, followed by an hour of guard duty.

Band Of Brothers' Training Paid Off In The Show Nevertheless, the torturous training paid off for the Easy Company actors. Not only did the performers gain a better understanding of their real-life soldier counterparts, the rigorous experience of bootcamp allowed them to achieve a pain-soaked rapport resembling that of a real military unit. While Band of Brothers technically follows Major Dick Winters, the true main character is Easy Company itself.

It’s a tactic that the filmmaker first used on the set of his earlier war epic, Saving Private Ryan. The bootcamp succeeded at bonding the core actors, although it alienated outsiders. Band of Brothers actor Andrew Scott, who plays a non-Easy Company paratrooper in one episode, recalls that the tightly-bonded Easy Company actors made for an atmosphere that was unwelcoming for a guest performer.
