Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan challenges the movie's designation as a biopic, as he believes that the genre is completely pointless.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Christopher Nolan doesn't believe that Oppenheimer should be categorized as a biopic. The movie tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer's work to develop the atomic bomb through the Manhattan Project. With the help of a star-studded cast and social media draw, it was a stunning box office success, earning nearly $950 million at the box office on a budget of only $100 million.
Nolan believes that other genres can be used in place of naming a specific movie as a biopic. After all, many movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Citizen Kane are biopics but are rarely referred to with that title. To Nolan, there are more appropriate genres that provide more insight into the property. Check out his full explanation below:
This is where the concept of a biopic fails you completely as a genre. It’s not a useful genre. I love working in useful genres. In this film…it’s the heist film as it applies to the Manhattan Project and the courtroom drama as it applies to the security hearings. It’s very useful to look at the conventions of those genres and how they can pull the audience and how they can give me communication with the audience.
Is The Biopic Designation Useful? Biopics have long been a commonly referenced element of media, but there are some issues with that designation. After all, there are countless movies that can be referred to as biopics, yet they have little to do with each other. Napoleon and Oppenheimer are both historical biopics related to war, but the settings, stories, and impacts are all immensely different.
