Skarsgård faced a difficult task when taking on the role of one of cinema's most terrifying clowns and following Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise in the 1990 It miniseries. A later addition after production changes led to Will Poulter leaving the role, Skarsgård emphasized the creature's more inhuman nature, looking to wildlife videos of hyenas and the unpredictable behaviors of his younger sibling to create his portrayal.
