LGE2021 | Qunu residents are hopeful their votes will give them water at last - they've been longing for access to water since 1994

Qunu is the home of the late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who is celebrated around the world as the father of democracy in the country. Madiba was not only instrumental in ushering in this country’s freedom and democracy, including the right to vote, but was known for being a champion for access to basic human rights.

Outside the Nelson Mandela No-Moscow Primary School voting station, residents spoke of the poor service delivery that they had been at the receiving end of for many years, but they were still optimistic things would improve after the elections. “We are voting today with the hope that the new incoming municipal council will look at the issue of water in Qunu. We drink dirty water with cows at the dam. The taps have been dry since they were installed three years ago. There is no water. We are really desperate,” he said, adding that they were also in need of housing in Qunu as the population was growing in the small village.

Another resident, Sonwabile Mazwi , said the main road in Qunu that cuts across the village was last maintained when Madiba was still alive. “The road has big potholes which result in cars being damaged. It is clear that, as residents of Qunu, we were only recognised because of Madiba because, after his passing, service delivery stopped.”
