India has announced a dramatic suspension of all postal services to the United States starting August 25, following sweeping tariff changes by the Trump administration. The move comes after Executive Order No. 14324 ended the duty-free exemption for items up to $800, hitting Indian exporters and postal customers hard.

ANNISTON — The city of Anniston will begin cutting down trees along Quintard Avenue beginning Monday, continuing a process city officials have said is necessary for safety and long-term planning along the historic corridor.

According to a public notice, beginning Monday, Aug. 25, tree removal work will take place along Quintard Avenue from 8th Street to 18th Street. Crews will remove seven trees that officials say “have reached the end of their natural lifespan and now pose potential safety hazards if left unaddressed.” No lane or street closures are expected, but motorists should anticipate minor delays as crews and equipment access the medians. The city said it is “working on replacement plans to ensure the continued beauty and safety of this corridor.” The trees lining Quintard — water oaks, pin oaks and white oaks planted more than a century ago — have long been a defining feature of the Model City. Anniston became a Tree City USA in 1991, with the Quintard medians serving as one of the main reasons for the designation.Hayes Jackson, regional extension agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, told The Star in February 2023 that “the trees on Quintard are old and are mortal just like people.” “A lot of times when trees of certain species get to a certain age they often tend to succumb to disease and insect issues,” Jackson said. Moreover, the oaks face stress from their urban setting. “Their roots are paved over and I know several years ago they trenched and put in irrigation lines which also damaged their roots, and you’ve got an urban environment that’s just tough on them,” Jackson said. Jackson described the process as “chronological senescence,” noting that “over time they just tend to die out and that’s just normal and they die out at the same time or close to the same time, because trees have a lifespan.” In 2023, Jackson warned about the dangers of weakened trees, including one with a hollowed-out trunk at 1024 Quintard. “There is a possibility that it’s weaker and it can topple, it may topple easier in a storm or it may just fall out of the blue,” he said. The risks have already become evident. In June of this year, a large oak blew down during a thunderstorm, blocking the southbound lane of Quintard between 10th and 11th Streets. City leaders have acknowledged the deep emotions tied to cutting the trees. At a February 2023 council meeting, former Councilman Jay Jenkins called the tree-lined avenue “one of our city’s greatest calling cards.” “It is very important, in my opinion, that we have an active plan not just to replace them but to decide to prepare for that as we go forward,” Jenkins said. “We need to have a proactive plan for replacement efforts because they don’t grow overnight.”“The public really, really needs to know that they’re dead and they’re dangerous and all the time I have people tell me, ‘well I didn’t know about that,’ I don’t know why they don’t know but I get that all the time,” Harris said. “It is a very, very volatile issue.” Former City Manager Steven Folks told the council in 2023 that a five-year plan was underway to guide Quintard median improvements, including replanting trees, at an estimated cost of $155,000.
