With his long and illustrious career, economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram is known by many as one of Malaysia's brightest sparks. Have fraudsters seeking to cash in on his reputation misrepresented themselves as Jomo on social media? Find out below.
Perhaps seeking to cash in on his reputation, Facebook pages and advertisements have recently appeared online, purportedly offering"investment advice" from Jomo.A post on Jomo's Facebook page showed that the economist has warned the public about how an impersonator has set up an account on Meta's social media platform.
The economist warned that the impostor had even set up a website using old photos of him that were publicly available to give it an impression of authenticity. "I am presented as an education and investment consultant, neither of which is true. There is even a contact telephone number for my supposed assistant," Jomo said in his post, adding that he has already reported the matter to Facebook and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
According to him, this happened several years ago as well when there was an earlier effort of this type. Jomo went on to say that he has never given investment advice and no plans of starting, adding that what he did on economic and other matters was free for the public.
