ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The nationwide conversation about data center development has arrived in Anchorage, as the Assembly is to hear public comment on the topic at Tuesday’s meeting.. While data centers have been around for decades now, Alaska falls towards the bottom of the list compared to most states, especially large states like California, Texas and Virginia, who leads the country with well over 500 data centers. In recent years, the proliferation of data centers, especially large, multi-billion-dollar facilities has rapidly increased, due in large part to expansions in AI development. The new code would require “sufficient system capacity” coming from the electrical grid for such facilities, as well as “sufficient water,” “adequate capacity in the sewer system,” and “adequate fire detection and suppression systems.” Data centers across the country accounted for roughly 4% of the entire nation’s energy country in 2024, according toThe powerful computer chips used in data center servers account for the most energy consumption, followed by massive cooling systems that prevent servers from overheating, according to Pew Research. Those same cooling systems account for the water usage of a data center. In 2023, data centers consumed about 17 billion gallons of water, according to Pew Research. Natural gas is the main source of energy for these data centers, according to Pew Research, as of 2024, it supplied 40% of their energy, while renewables like wind and solar made up 24%, nuclear power supplied 20% and coal 15%. So, on a related note, the Assembly is also scheduled to discuss a resolution that would recognize the potential benefits of a long-term natural gas supply for Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska. Public hearing on the data center code change begins on Tuesday evening.
