Seattle City Council approved two new public safety measures but there are questions how officials will enforce them.

President Biden hosts a reception in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the contributions of the Latino community to the U.S. Seattle City Council approved two new public safety measures but there are still questions about how officials will enforce them and what reductions in crime they will bring.

Judges at Seattle Municipal Court can order these bans as a condition of pretrial release as well as after a person has been convicted of the crime. Returning to that zone could get the person re-arrested and charged with a gross misdemeanor for violating the order. Six neighborhoods have designated SODA zones that cover parts of Belltown, the area around Third and Pine, Capitol Hill, Pioneer Square, the University District and the Chinatown-International District. When it comes to drug offenses, a SODA violation won’t apply to drug dealing because that is a felony and does not end up in municipal court. Councilmember Robert Kettle, who sponsored the SODA zone legislation, said it’s still an important piece in the public safety picture.

The SOAP legislation makes prostitution loitering a misdemeanor. It also creates a new offense called promoting prostitution loitering to target those who profit from commercial sexual exploitation. Under the SOAP bill, pimps could be charged with a gross misdemeanor.
