'Trauma is an inherent part of the queer experience for most people.'

caught up with Stephen Dunn to discuss queer resilience, both in the face of trauma and also the nitpicky critics who claim this show includesmuch trauma. Because, spoiler alert: they're wrong, and these kind of accusations miss the point ofWhat kind of conversations did you have with Russell T Davies, coming into this project?

He was really encouraging about all of us taking it in a new direction. The greatest gift he gave me was that after he saw the pilot, he was just absolutely floored, and was like,"It's so new. It's so 2020. And it's yours. Take it now, and run with it." What I pledged when I was originally meeting these survivors was that I was just never going to show the violence. I was never going to tell that story. I don't want to see it, I don't want to give it any more energy whatsoever.Because I want the show to really focus on the rebuilding, on the strength, on the resilience, on the search and fight for joy – that is the driving force behind the storytelling and our writers' room. That was the main goal.

Sexuality is such a huge part of the queer experience. Also, I'm really proud of our sex scenes in the show.
