Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has pitched a long-touted – and questioned – idea as part of his crime-focused election campaign.
Queensland’s LNP opposition has promised to set up a public child sex offender register if it wins government in the looming October 26 election.Reintroduction of a register to public debate by LNP leader David Crisafulli comes amid a key election campaign in which his party has focused heavily on crime.
“Government must create the legal and administrative framework in which reform can occur and the safety of children can be promoted,” he said. Realistically, the proposal would only be semi-public, with the first of its three tiers to include a website with photos and details of “reportable offenders” who fail to meet obligations or mislead police.A second “application-based” tier would identify “high-risk” offenders in a local area and allow residents to apply for a photo.
