Queensland’s gender pay gap has marginally improved, but women still earned far less than men and the state’s disparity remained larger than the national average.
The latest Queensland gender equality report, released on Saturday, also showed the proportion of Queensland women working as chief executives or managing directors had fallen to 17.5 per cent last financial year from 23.8 per cent in 2020-21.In the state’s public sector, women accounted for 67.1 per cent of full-time workers as of March 2022, but only 51.2 per cent of leadership roles.
But she acknowledged “completely unacceptable” statistics, including that women accounted for more than 87 per cent of sexual assault victims and were three times more likely to be killed by their partner. This was a gap of 15.6 per cent, down from 15.8 per cent in May 2021. The national gap was 14.1 per cent.“It’s ... encouraging to see the gender pay gap closing, but the disparity remains far too great, and we need to continue to work harder to bridge that divide as soon as possible,” Fentiman said.
In 2017-18, the average Queensland woman’s superannuation balance was $111,275, about 32.2 per cent less than the average for a man. By 2019-20, the average discrepancy was 21.1 per cent.
