Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls announced a pause on new prescriptions for puberty blockers and gender dysphoria hormones for individuals under 18. The pause excludes those already receiving these medications, and children experiencing gender dysphoria are still encouraged to seek support services.
Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls on Wednesday announced the Australian state would halt new prescriptions for puberty blockers and gender dysphoria hormones for people under 18.
The announcement comes as the government conducts a review of the gender-altering procedures. Nicholls acknowledged this area of medicine has undergone significant transformations in recent years. “Paediatric gender care is a rapidly evolving area of health involving complex medical, psychological, family and social considerations,” he wrote via X. “In light of emerging international evidence and policy decisions, it is critical that Queensland undertakes its own review.”
“The pause for the delivery of Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormone therapy for children under 18 does not include those who are currently being prescribed those medications,” he added. “We advise children experiencing gender dysphoria to still present so they can receive support services.”“Such a shame the ban doesn’t apply to children who are already being medicalized,” she wrote.
